The doctor said, 'The problem lies in his (father) getting older.'

'The' should be capitalised.

Lafang TamWas the doctor right ...?
Yes, but there is an alternate version which is more formal: his father's getting older

All the suggestions so far, are very strange and excessively formal. It would be much simpler and more common in everyday language to say something like the problem is because he is getting older.

English never has a comma between a subject and a predicate.
Anonymousthe problem is because that he is getting older
As shown.

My father has been suffering from back pain. The doctor said, 'The problem lies in his (father) getting older.'

I interpreted that the word "father" was inserted by the poster to indicate "his" refers to his father.
