Old-fashioned

'Call us old-fashioned but all Chemistry teachers think it is simply a sin not to appreciate the beauty of these colours'.

Why is it 'old-fashioned' instead of 'old-fashion'?

And, is the (-) necessary in 'old-fashioned'?

Please explain.

Thanks. Emotion: smile

Yes, Spectacle, hyphen is obligatory, it's a compound word. Old-fashioned is an adjective and should be written with the ending -ed. Old fashion is written separately, without a hyphen.

Hi there,

May I know the meaning of 'hyphen'?

And, is this sentence correct? 'Mary is an old-fashioned girl.'

Thanks again.

Old fashion is written separately, without a hyphen.

Old fashion doesn't have the same meaning as old-fashioned. Treat it as any other adjective-noun combination. Long dresses were worn as part of the old fashion for looking ridiculous.
