Old battle-axe

Hi,

old battle-axe [+]

(1) Is this term ( = a bossy old woman?) dated? (and I hope it's normally neither rude nor offensive?)
If it is dated, what word(s) are used for [+] in everyday English nowadays?

(2) What slang words do you normally use when describing someone as a bossy old man?

Thank you for your help!

It's definitely rude. I haven't heard anyone say that in quite a while, which is a plus now that I think of it. Crotchety and cantankerous are used for men.
