If you look at your dictionary, you wouldn't find the word 'lawmaker'. Instead of saying a member of the parliament, media use the word 'lawmaker'. Is it too modern English?
For 'okeying', I would say 'okaying' (or maybe 'OK-ing').
The media use 'lawmaker' when they want to emphasise the fact that these appalling people do actually make our laws. In the UK, the word would have a slightly ironic air.
