OIL COMPANY

1. Rusty had moved to California to work for an oil company / a petro company after he finished his contract at Microsoft.

- Does this sound ok in English writing?

Hi, Yes, but say 'an oil company' or perhaps 'a petroleum company'. The former is more common, I think. You need to have a reason/context to use the Past Perfect rather than the Simple Past.
