Oh my God/goodness.

Someone tells me that it's impolite to say "Oh my God." The polite alternative is "Oh my goodness." Do you agree?

I agree to some extent. I've noticed that Oh my *** is avoided on television, for example, and Oh my goodness or Oh my gosh is almost always used instead. Oh my *** is perfectly fine among friends who don't object to it, of course.

A number of years ago I was on a cruise to Alaska, and we went into Glacier Bay. As 1200 people stood watching, when the glacier calved, it was "Oh, my ***". As a choir director, I couldn't have directed it much more perfectly. I began to wonder if that was "the origin of the phrase".

Affirmative! I guess everybody needs to stop using lord's name in vain every now and then.
