What if something insubstantial like a system?

"The metric system is more often used in the world."
Is "often" better?

There is a very fine line between well-used and worn out.
Well-used has the connotation that the item is such a favorite that you are reluctant to throw it away.

Well used is usually an adjective describing the thing itself.
Often used is an adverb + verb describing an action.
As AS observed, well used often suggests that you can tell by looking at it that the thing has been used a lot.
