offset

i'm concerned with the use of "offset". actually i intend to use it as follows in the given context:

John owes Tom USD2800. meanwhile Tom owes John USD2000.

I wonder if I may say:

1) If their debts are offset against each other, John should pay Tom USD800.

2)By offseting their debts against each other, John should pay Tom USD800.

i shall be grateful if you can try to correct me if i'm wrong or provide a better choice of word for improvement.

They both sound OK to me ( offsetting has two t 's, though); and I don't think you need the phrase ' against each other '-- it seems redundant. Actually, the only thing that grates is ' USD ' where I would use the dollar sign, ' $ '.
