Official protocol, meaning ..

Hi

A CIA agent was lying on the bed. Suddenly his phone called. It was a general who was his supervisor. The general wanted to know if he already found the suspect.

"He didn't want to answer it but he had to. Official protocol, meaning he didn't want to be transferred to undercover duty in, say, Tehran or Pyongyang."

My understanding is: The agent had to deliver to the general the official protocol which meant that he didn't want to be sent either to Teheran or Pyongyang and work there as an undercover agent.

So in other words he had to tell him what he's doing because if he didn't do that he might be sent to other country to work there, and he didn't want that.

Is my understanding correct?

Hi, Without more context, 'official protocol' seems to mean either that he should tell the general what he wants to know, or simply that he should answer the phone. It doesn't mean that there is some 'official protocol' document that must be delivered. Being given a dangerous assignment is the punishment for not following the official protocol.

Hi

It seems clearer now to me.

The agent had to keep the general posted on the investigation. That was the rule.

So if he didn't want to be sent to these countries to work there he had to follow the official protocol, that is infrom the general about the investigation.

I think this is what it means.

You think it could make sense?
