In a card, I might write: "I was very sorry to hear about the death of your [brother]. My condolences to you and your family."

This is an interesting question because what you might actually say is not as formal as what you might write in card. For instance, you don't actually say "may he rest in peace" or "my condolences to you and your family". It sounds too formal.

I may say something like "I am sorry about what happened...please let me know if there is anything I can do to help."

Interesting topic. I have had to attend to a couple of funerals, and at least in my country, some people consider that any kind of word, sentence or condolence is something 'useless', I have seen the relatives so sad that I think it is better not to say anything at all, just a strong hug. Do you follow this suggestion in English speaking countries?

Hello Latin

There's usually a little weeping and hugging at an English funeral, but mainly between the close friends and relatives.

The rest of us tend to stand round rather stiffly under our umbrellas and cough nervously if anyone seems about to hug us...

Hello MrP
I'd like to ask you more about your custom when it comes to funerals. For ex, when a person dies do you keep the coffin at home or church one day for everyone to see him/her? Now let's suppose this is the situation and your neighbour, that is not a personal friend but you say hello to him if you see him in the street , has died, do you go to his house to accompany his relatives? Hello Latin

Yes, the body is usually displayed in the coffin before the funeral; sometimes at home, or sometimes at the undertaker's.

If you're invited to the funeral, you're usually invited to the house as well – for drinks before the funeral, and often for food and drink afterwards. But if you're only a casual acquaintance, it's common to decline the invitation to the house.
