Offensive player

Thanks for your response to my post.

A goal kick in football is awarded to a team if an offensive player plays the ball out of bounds over the goal line.

I know the meaning of 'offensive' but I didn't get its use in this sentence. What does 'offensive player' mean? The defender or attacker?
