off-limits & off-putting?

Hi,

Using these words is it correct to hyphenate them.
With similar words (off guard) I have been advised not to hyphenate. But scrolling around the Internet I believe these 2 examples are to be hyphenated. Can anyone clarif?

off-limits and off-putting are hyphenated. They are adjectives.
Off guard is an adverbial prepositional phrase.

He was caught off guard.
