Off and on

Hi

Please help me with this:

He did not let the motor function continuously: he switched it off and restarted now and then.

Can I express above idea in this way?

He made the motor function off and on.

'Function' upsets me. Let me put them more naturally: He did not let the motor run continuously: he switched it off and restarted it now and then. - - No, this still sounds too terse; the meaning is unclear compared to your first sentence.
