In the game of cricket why do we use 'off' to mean 'from' as in "Sachin scored 200 off 147 balls." or "He hit a six off my bowling" ?

There are some special terminologies in cricket. Off is one of them. Over is another example which means "set of six ***** delivered by a bowler."
