off

Those of you who seated on the right-hand side of the aircraft should be able to see the Grand Canyon off in the distance.

Advisors, why is off used here? I mean, what does it mean in this sentence? Is it an essential word here, or just a modification word for see?

It would not alter the meaning of the sentence if we removed it. 'Off' as an adverbial is used to mean far from the place where you are. 'Off' does not anchor to 'see' in the sentence.
