Of the year vs. in a year

Is there any difference between these two sentences: (1) January is the first month of the year. (2) January is the first month in a year.

Is there any difference between these two sentences:

(1) January is the first month of the year.

(2) January is the first month in a year.

There is really no difference between 'of' and 'in' here.

'The year' stresses, more than 'a year', that the writer is thinking of every year.
