of the people, for the people, by the people

Hi,

It is a bit confusing to me when I am trying to understand the phrase "of the people, for the people, by the people" in the sentance "Democracy is of the people, for the people, by the people" especially "of the people." If you could elaborate more on what does it mean by that phrase, I would greatly appreciate it.

Have a nice day.

Regards.
