of the Democratic Party's first family

Mr Obama has been a favourite of the media for months, but his victory over Hillary Clinton, of the Democratic Party's first family, seems partly to be a result of a massive increase in turn-out in Iowa (nearly double that of 2004), especially by young voters.

I don't know the meaning of that part. Please explain to me.

The family occupying the White House is of course referred to as the first family, just as the president's wife is referred to as the first lady and his dog is called the first dog. Since the Democrats are not in power the first family is not theirs. But if you had to pick a first family for the Democrats - the most prominent family in Democratic politics - the Clintons would have to be it, by virtue of once having occupied the White House and having some possibility of occupying it again.
