"of the"

Hi everyone,

I hope all is well. I'm wondering which sentence is right. Maybe you can help me.

"The popularity of superheroes have sky-rocketed in the past year."

or

"The popularity of superheroes has sky-rocketed in the past year."

I'm leaning towards the second one, but I appreciate any help you can provide.

Cheers,
