Grammar

"...of some sort of..." or "...some sort of..."

Is the first "of" in the sentence below necessary?

"I hope that I can be of some sort of assistance to the department."

Or should it simply be:

"I hope that I can be some sort of assistance to the department."

If it is not necessary, would it be grammatically incorrect to have it there?

Thanks in advance!

T he first 'of'' is better grammar, but it is often omitted. I hope you are not going to say this in a job application. It's an extremely weak statement.

No. Tomorrow starts my second week at a new employer. However, due to the horrible weather conditions we currently have in Chicago, the office will be closed. My department was instructed to work from home. Considering I am still in training, I wanted to let my boss know that I would be willing to help out in any way that I could.

I appreciate your response. Thanks again!
