Of Reading Vs To Read

Dear teachers,

Which of the following two sentences is grammatical and idiomatic? To me, sentence 1 sounds right but is there a grammatical rule that says sentence 2 is wrong?

1. I thought of writing in this diary, and then to read "Scarlet Letter".

2. I thought of writing in this diary, and then of reading "Scarlet Letter".

Thank you very much

Selvakumar2. I thought of writing in this diary, and then of reading "Scarlet Letter".

#2 is right because parallel structure is required: 'I thought of writing..and of reading...'
