Of - phrases

Hi,

Could you please tell me what "post - modification by an of phrase" is? Does it mean modification by an of - phrase of something which precedes it

For instance, in the following examples, would you kindly tell me which ones we call "of constructions/phrases" and what things they are modifying if they are modifying anything.

- Maybe you don't believe, but the signatures of your dad are still in my school note-books.

- Total number of signatures not followed by rectifications was considered wrong.

Teaches, please let me know if I am not clear enough about my question.

Thank you all.

I think it would mean that a phrase/sentence is being modified by a phrase containing the word of , and that this "of phrase" comes after it. Can you give some context? The examples you wrote don't contain the word of at all.

Laboriouspost - modification by an of phrase
Pre-modifiers go before the thing they modify; post-modifiers go after the thing they modify.

Post-modification by an of-phrase therefore means that the of-phrase occurs after and modifies something.

Example: the signatures of your dad
"of your dad" post-modifies "the signatures".

Dear Elanguest, I don't know why you don't see the 'ofs' in my examples which I wrote in my first post. I don't know what the problem is, but I can see them (on my page). Anyway, heartily thanks to both of you, teachers! And I am going to write them again here.

Dear teachers, I have one more question related to this thread, please.

The question is - In my second example "Total number of signatures... .", isn't 'of' pre - modifying the 'signatures'? Could you give me an example or two of pre - modification (of something, for e.g. a 'noun') by an "of - phrase", please?

No. Prepositions don't modify. They are called the "head" of "preposition phrases".
