Of myself OR of mine

Hi,
I found something awkward about this sentence from a Jeffrey Archer short story
" EM was a friend of my father rather than myself..."

Should it read
" EM was a friend of my father's rather than mine..." there being an "of" implied before "mine"
I searched this forum for the string "friend of myself" and found no hits, not that it proves anything!
Thanks

Yes, "of mine". Not "myself". Myself is reflexive.

You are the only one who can be a friend of yourself. EM can be a friend of yours.

There's nothing grammatically wrong with "friend of myself", but it runs the risk that many people will think it's wrong.

If you want to reword it, it would

Well, two you feel it is wrong and Bob says it is OK. But, I guess, overall it is better to avoid that kind of a construct. Maybe I should drop a line to Lord Archer :-)

There may be a place where "friend of myself" is ok, such as I was a friend of myself" but as used it's wrong.
Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves are either reflexive or intensive. There are no ot

[nq:1]That gives it the wrong emphasis. What Archer is trying to say was that although he knew EM, the latter was closer to his father than to him. I don't think it implies that EM and he were not friends.[/nq]
He does not imply that he even knows EM. He implies nothing about his relationship with EM.
Frankly, I don't give an **** about what he "is trying to say". What is important is what

It's wrong to say it's wrong. Read the usage note in the American Heritage Dictionary: Fourth Edition at
