'of marginal utiity'?

Hi,

Please have a look at this:

Your company probably had a lot of initiatives under way before the slowdown began. Some of those initiatives may be of marginal utility, and others may not fit with the new vision or strategy.

What does the bold part mean?

Many thanks,

Nessie.

If a student's grades are marginally allowing him to pass, he barely makes the passing grade. The bold-face text means that the initiatives are barely considered feasible. Though, "utility" seems to an odd word to used in my opinion.

Utility is usefulness, in the uncountable sense. Something which is in the margin, or on the fringes, doesn't qualify for the main deal. We'll use it if there's nothing better.
