Of + gerund

Is the following sentence right? If I omit the "of" in the following sentence, will it come to sound awkward?

Something that I dreamed about is now suddenly within not too many minutes of actually happening.

The whole structure of this sentence is a little strange which is why it's difficult to work out what goes there. I would phrase is it as: "Something I dreamt about is now suddenly within minutes of actually happening" or "Something I dreamt about could actually happen any minute now" Either way; in your original sentence, it needs the "of".
