Of-construction

Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me if the following sentence construction is correct, and how it should be analysed?

Tom is not aware of the difficulties of her situation.

It is not a form of genitive, so what is it?

Thank you for your help.

  • The underlined is a noun phrase, the object of the preposition 'of'.
  • Some would analyze the underlined as the object of the phrasal idiom 'be aware of', I suppose.
  • Otherwise, 'of' + the underlined phrase is a complement to the adjective 'aware'.

Would you please tell me what is an appositive genitive in English?

An 'of' phrase describing the preceding noun: the sound of silence, the steps of the church, the bells of St. Mary's (that's a tricky one!)

Dear Mister Micawber,

Now if you look at "the difficulties of her situation" alone, how would you analyse the construction?
Is it a form of genitive/possessive case, i.e., the difficulties are in someway related to her situation?? If not, what kind of construction is it, please?

All the best,
Hela
