Vocabulary

of a kind

To find order in the changes, we seek refuge, of a kind, in statistics: in my years in China, the number of airline passengers doubled; cell phone sales tripled; the length of the Beijing subway quadrupled.

Could you tell me what the meaning of "of a kind"? Does it mean that refuge as a kind of elements of statistic?

"of a kind" modifies "refuge". "refuge, of a kind" means something like a refuge, but not one that is fully satisfactory or perhaps fully deserves to be called that. "of a kind" is a set expression.
