I would say "The patient is on diuretics," or "The patient is on a diuretic."
(I believe it's a countable noun.)

Wouldn't anyone likely to read the report know what oedema of lower extremities is due to?

According to my understanding, "accumulation of fluid" (retention of water) is the oedema, not actually its cause.

I could understand using "due to" if you wished to cite an unusual fluid, or perhaps a secondary cause.

AvangiHi, Sri, According to my understanding, "accumulation of fluid" (retention of water) is the oedema, not actually its cause.

Accumulation of fluid (or) retention of water is only one of the types of oedema.

Accumulation of fluid = Retention of water. Both give same meaning.

Many thanks for your informative reply, Sri. I'll keep this in mind.
"Pitting edema" was what I struggled with. I understood that it referred to the fact that you could press your finger into the effected area and it would leave an indentation when you removed it.
(Since I've been able to walk regularly, there's no more swelling!)
