OED definition

Hello,
my question concerns those who have an oed account or other access.
I looked "word" because i needed an exact edfinition of it.
But i only found something confusing.
I will write it down:
"II. An element of speech

12.a. A combination of vocal sounds, or one such sound, used in a languageto express an idea (e.g. to denote a thing, attribute, or relation), and constituting an ultimate minimal element of speech having a meaning as such; a vocable"
b. As designating a thing or person:A name, title appellation..

c. A written (engraved, printed, etc.) character or set of characters representing this."
so, what kind of definition is 12.c.?
representing this? what this??
This what is mentioned under 12.c.?
Or the whole thing under II?
Call me stupid, but i think this is not a good and clear definition!

It's a continuation of 12. The 'a.' section explains what is meant by "II. An element of speech", that is, it's a collection of sounds. Then 'c.' extends the definition of

I suppose "this" refers to the spoken word as defined in a. and b. Section c. just extends the definition to cover the written word. CB
