Odd One Out

(A) Camillo Benso, Conte di Cavour was a powerful politician in the nation of Piedmont-Sardinia. (B) He played a leading role in bringing the various states of the Italian peninsula together. (C) However, he died only after the majority of them had been united into a single kingdom. (D) He then went on to try and extend the borders of it. (E) However, he didn't live to see Venice or Rome become part of this new country.

Which one is irrelevant? I'm stuck between C and D. I couldn't find the answer actually. I think it could be D but I'm not sure.

Yes actually first I thought like that. But I read it again, the passage talks about his life briefly. I can't understand the connection between B and D if we eliminate C. In B it says "He played a leading role.." and then in D it says, "He then went on to try..." What did he do first and he then went on to try? Could you explain?
