Grammar

occur, happen, take place

Hi there,
I don't know the difference in usage among occur, happen and take place.
For example,

1.Whooping cough occurs mainly in children.
2.Climate changes have occurred at intervals throughout millennium.

Can I replace 'occur' in the above examples with 'happen' and 'take place'?
