Vocabulary

occupied

Imagine someone has made a reservation in a restaurant for a particular table but when they arrive at the restaurant somebody else is sitting at that table. Can the waitress say this?

'I'm afraid the table is occupied .'

Is there any better adjective? Is it busy possible?

Occupied seems ok, busy doesn't seem quite right. You could say 'I'm sorry that table is in use at the moment'

It sounds an unusual situation. You book a table, and the restaurant gives it to someone else?

Outrageous. Go to Macdonald's instead.

Then,

"I'm afraid, sir, your table has been appropriated. Please do not kill me."
