Hi

Is the red part natural English? Any other suggestions please.

blow-up = outburst of anger

Father had occasional blow-ups at his mother and they were pretty understandable. She could be extremely annoying and nagging.

That's reasonably natural. For some reason "with his mother" sounds a little better to my ear.
