"In the blanks" or "in brackets" / "within parentheses"?

Sorry for the off-topic, I have to ask because I understand "In the blanks" only as "in a blank/empty space", for instance in one of those "fill in the gap"/"fill in the blanks" exercises.

You're right. It should be in brackets or in the brackets. It's often the case -- we cannot spot our own mistakes.
