Obscure FD7/Movie Magic question...

Question

Does anybody know if FD7 and Movie Magic Screenwriter for Mac are Cocoa applications, or carbon ones?

I'm struggling to get eastern-european characters into my script in FD6 -- it doesn't play nice with Unicode fonts, I think because it's a carbon app.

Screenwriter was developed using the latest versions of Metrowerks Codewarrior. It is a C application.

While it does use the Carbon framework, it DOES use anti-aliased text (there's a program preference you can turn on).

Some dialogs user the older fonts, which don't anti-alias well. This is being changed.

I think the focus for us will be on features, as well as improving the look-and-feel of the UI. However, there's not a strong enough case to make it a Cocoa app -- yet.

Cocoa is the native OSX API (the interface by which the application talks to the operating system.)

Carbon is the transitional one. To make life easier for developers, they added a second API, which required much less tweaking so that developers didn't have to rewrite their programs from the ground up to have them work in OSX.

The problem is that Cocoa is, well, better. OSX is written with Cocoa in mind, and Carbon is a little kludgey. For example, OSX has some very powerful font-management tools -- but some of the newfangled ways of handling fonts don't show up properly in a Carbon application (like Final Draft.) Cocoa applications can also access OSX's built-in spellchecker, as well as other nifty features.

It may be that FD's atrocious handling of modern fonts isn't Cocoa/Carbon related. My Courier Final Draft font has, supposedly, the characters I need in it. There's just no way to access them. And if I try to paste in a more modern unicode character, FD gives me junk.

Anybody using MMS in OSX want to do me a favor? Can you get a Croatian o-with-an-upside-down ^ on top of it easily into a document? How about an S with the same upside-down carat over it? (I've been completely unable to do this in FD6, but if somebody wants to check out if it's possible in FD7, too, I'd appreciate it. Although it's really hard to see myself upgrading to FD7.)

You might want to try downloading the trial version of MMS and see if it will do what you describe. Besides, you're going to want to go with MMS sometime anyhow. Might as well get used to it now. :~)
