Vocabulary

obscure

Hi teacher

An obscure conqueror of fame.

In the dictionary 'obscure' is 'not famous'. But when there's 'fame' at the end. I get really confused.

Can you reword this sentence?
Thanks

It's not a complete sentence. it's just a phrase. Can you provide some additional context?

Hi Ivanhr,

Nothing, it's just 'He was known as an obscure conqueror of fame'.

Hard to say. Perhaps he didn't actually conquer anything (but fame). Maybe he died trying to conquer a land or city, which just added more to his fame. "obscure" seems to stand in contrast to "fame", and might suggest that he would have been much more famous had his military campaigns been successful.

Of course, this is pure speculation on my part.

Hi Ivanhr,

He was known an obscure conquerer of fame.

Does 'obscure' modify 'conquerer'? What about 'fame'?

Thanks
