I know that ‘obligated is more likely to be used in a legal context, but other than that I don’t know how to tell them apart.

Both are used, and I think it may be a matter of regional preferences. I hear around me and I use 'obligated' in contexts like that, but there's nothing wrong with 'obliged'. CJ
