Object/subject of examination(s)

Hello,

I am writing an essey about terminally ill people, and - among others - the distinction between "patient" and "individual". Can you please tell me whether my sentence is correct?

"Patients are treated marely as the objects/subjects of examinations/an examination and treatment."

Should I use "objects" or "subject"? And should "examination" be in singular or plural?

Thank you
