Numerical expression 10 vs ten

Hello

As far as I know, when you write numbers, written out "ten" is preferred to "10" for small numbers.

However, I often see arabic numerals in academic papers.

Is that a usual mistake or an intended acceptable use to make the numeral stand out clearly?

Thanks for your kindness.

It depends on the publisher's house style; after review and acceptance, academic papers go through a copy editing process performed by the publisher. For example, recently I've had all my "ten"s changed to "10"s by an elsevier copy editor. Mostly people seem to agree that single-digit numbers should be written in full, while multi-digit numbers are written as numerals.
