Numbers or words to start a sentence

Is it wrong, or awkward, starting a sentence with a number expressed in Arabic numeral instead of words? (e.g. “11 students were late”)

I know it would be safer to turn the numbers into text: “Eleven students were late”, however, as I’m dealing with a document plenty of figures, where the standard is express them as numbers, I would prefer not to do so.
