Letter Writing

Numbers in parentheses

Context of question:
  • Business email (semi-casual, not overly formal)
  • Content of email is technical in nature (eg. computer networking, interfacing, description of software bugs)
Question

I searched the forums for this topic, but it's a difficult question to phrase. In the following scenarios, is it appropriate to use numbers in parentheses? Is this simply done for readability's sake, or is there perhaps another reason? Is there a scenario when this would not be appropriate?

  • There were three (3) distinct issues at play.
  • Of the fourteen aliases, a total of seven (7) were found to be duplicate.
  • Please provide the four (4) following piece of information.

Thanks!

Hi, Doing this seems excessively cautious formal, and seemingly legalistic in tone as if it were written by a lawyer. I don't think it fits the context you describe at all. Clive
