Numbers - '2' or 'two'?

When including numerals in a sentence, which is more correct:

1) I have 2 cars

2) I have two cars

I remember being told at school that numbers up to ten should be written as the word of that number (one, two, three etc), thereafter the numeral should be written (11,12,13 etc)

Your teacher was a good teacher. Yes, it is better formal style to write the word when the number is small and the word manageable-- up to 'twelve', I tell students. Also, any number at the beginning or end of the sentence should be written out, for obvious reasons: 'I was only 12.
