number verb

hi,

I am not sure how to use the verb number in a sentence properly.

Here i found we can say," a delegation numbered 80 from government" to say there are 80 staff members from government.

How about if we say a baseball player whose number is 40, can i say," the player numbered 40 caught the ball", or say," the player number 40 caught the ball." which one is correct?

thanks

Here i found we can say," a delegation numbered 80 from government" to say there are 80 staff members from government . -- No, you cannot. - - The 2nd one is more correct, but it would actually be ' Player number 40' (no 'the').

Thanks Mister Micawber,

I found this sentence in an English dictionary. I don't know if this is different from my sentence.

We numbered 20 (= there were 20 of us in the group).

If that is wrong, can i say "a delegation of 26 visited" instead?

thanks

We numbered 20 (= there were 20 of us in the group).-- This works because 'we' did the numbering ourselves; the delegation as above did not do it—the delegation was counted by the writer.

If that is wrong, can i say "a delegation of 26 visited" instead?- -You can say this.
