"Number" singular or plural?
0 I just ran across this sentence: "There was a record number of these very fast and valuable machines entered in the race." Seems like "a number of... machines" should be treated exactly like "many machines," indisputably a plural. Shouldn't it be "a record number...were...entered in the race"? 0-
