Number on/in a phone

Which is correct and why?:
"Does Ron have a secret number of Dona on/in his phone?"

I wouldn't call 'in' wrong, but I always hear 'on'.

"Does Ron have a secret number for Donna on his phone?"

If it is stored in the phone's electronic memory, it is "in" the phone.
If Ron wrote Dona's secret number with a marker on the outside surface of the phone, it is "on" the phone. In that case, it would not be a secret for very long.

There may also be an age-difference involved. Young and old people often speak differently.

(I'm not thinking specifically of myself and A-stars!

I would say "in", but I wouldn't think it odd if someone said "on".
A check of GloWbe suggests "in" is much more common in this context, but "on" is not unknown.
