Number agreement

Regarding the following sentence:

What is frequently said among many linguists is that language is one of the characteristics which [ ] humans from the other animals.

Which is the right form of the verb to fill in the bracket, "distinguish" or "distinguishes"?

I think that the relative pronoun clause that begins with "which" modifies the antecedent "characteristics," so "distinguish" is the right form. But one of my friends says otherwise. He says that "distinguishes" is appropriate because the relative pronoun clause modifies the pronoun "one." What do you think?

Thank you so much, Tamguatlay.

Could I ask a question? I just did some research on Google, and found that apparently, quite a few native speakers use the "one of the characteristics which distinguishes ..." pattern. What do you think about this? What is the "common sense" that native speakers share about this problem?

Native speakers do often use a form that is not logical. The 'correct' form is taught at school rather than learnt naturally, but is often forgotten.
