Number

Hi,

Is the following a correct use of the verb number?

- The interval between two crests can be as wide as a few hundred meters, while the distance between crest and through numbers in the centimeters.

Thank you for your help

I suppose "through" is a typo for "trough". I think the use of "numbers" is a bit dubious if subjected to close scrutiny, but if I read the sentence in the normal course of events, I probably wouldn't notice a problem.

Yes, "trough". Sorry.

What could I use instead of numbers? [...] reads in the centimeters? [...] spans mere centimeters?

In the US the verb "number" is typically used in only a few situations, like the following:

His conquests numbered in the thousands.

I want you to number these folders consecutively for each category.
