Nuance of (work) "around"

Hi,

Months ago, I learned "through" implies the meaning of "complitation." Like, "speed through" means "quickly done." It was very useful tip and now I would like to know the hidden meaning of "around."

For instance, what does this "around" doing here? (this character has a lisp issue.)

Plurals presented a considerable problem, but I worked around them as best I could; "rivers," for example, became either "a river or two" or "many a river."

Thank you for your help,

M
