"nuance"

Hi, folks!

There is a phrase I have trouble making sense of.

Could anyone help me get correct understanding
of the following part of the sentence quoted :

By the end of the first year of life, most of us have
our environment pretty well categorized and have "made
a sizeable start on the social and interactional nuances"
with which we contend for the rest of our lives.

I would interpret the phrase quoted as "started to appreciate
subtle differences in social and interactional settings."

What would you think about it?

Yes, I think your interpretation is reasonable. I'm not sure I agree with the actual statement though. I have not known many one-year-old babies who have any understanding of "social and interactional nuances".
