"now" used in past tense sentences: possible or not?

Can we use the word "now" in past tense? Could you, please, give some examples if yes.

How does the sentence sound? Is it ok or odd?

And now, sitting in the back of the wagon with her back toward Chiledu, she felt his look on her nape.

I disagree... now is a present tense word and should not be used in a past tense sentence... Your dictionary example isn't even close to showing a similarity to the above sentence.
